Politicians Insider Trading? No Way

There was a 60 Minutes piece this past weekend exposing the practice in Washington of our congressman trading on "insider information".  I found the expose interesting when you stripped away the fact that 60 Minutes tried to make it look like only Republicans are doing this and that only the Democrats are trying to stop it.  But I found this take interesting in that it was not the view I ended up at.
And in more government encroachment news:

I found this story interesting, especially in light of how little press this story is getting.  This is way worse for the public employees than what happened in WI or OH, yet this has not been covered.

Crony Capitalism and ObamaCare

In case you needed anymore evidence of the inability of the government to lead effectively or efficiently, but I doubt you do.
And since the SCOTUS decided to hear the case on ObamaCare, that has been in the news a lot too.

Our New Dictators and the 2012 Race

Vice President Biden gave the weekly address for President Obama yesterday.  In the speech he said essentially "if the Republicans don't want to do what is best for this country then we will do it unilaterally."  This has been a common theme out of the White House under this administration.  They continue to flaunt the law and do whatever they feel like doing.  Not to mention that the Democrats on the Super Committee right now are stonewalling the negotiations.  But don't worry, the media will cover for them and blame it all on the "unreasonable Republicans."
Over the last few weeks I'm turning more and more into a Newt guy.  He has by far the best grasp of the issues on every topic.  The other, and possibly biggest, thing that has tipped me in Newt's direction is his unwillingness to fight with the other candidates.  While they are all sniping one another he appears to be the only adult in the room.  So here's some stuff on Newt.

Un-Presidential Candidates, ObamaCare, the Economy

Well, I have to say that all the current leading Republican candidates have absolutely turned me off.  The last three debates have been nothing but sniping and outright attacks.  In my humble opinion, the leaders (Perry, Romney, and Bachmann) have appeared completely un-presidential.  The candidate I'm looking for doesn't lower themselves to constantly smearing their opponents, but rather, they spend their time telling you why their ideas work and why they would be the best fit to lead this country.   From that perspective, I think Newt and Herman Caine are far and away the leaders.
And it appears that what once was a victory for ObamaCare is going to wind up a defeat after all

Debt Ceiling and the Economy Still Suck

Regarding the debt ceiling:
The President insists his party is offering serious spending cuts and entitlement reform. He also likes to talk about "balance," which to him means real tax increases immediately and speculative spending cuts some time in the distant future. Behind the scenes the White House has only ever agreed to token reform and cuts. Here's a number for the debt history books: Mr. Obama's final offer in the Biden talks was a $2 billion cut in 2012 nondefense discretionary spending. The federal government spends more than $10 billion a day.
Results are starting to trickle in from Wisconsin, and guess what, the sky isn't falling:

WSJ Cornucopia

The Wall Street Journal was absolutely en fuego yesterday with several great articles.

Chief Incompetant

The hypocrisy of this administration is beyond breath-taking:

Mark Dayton, Chief Incompetant

As we near a government shutdown here in Minnesota the news coming out of the capital is getting me spitting mad.  Of course, you won't hear any of this from the mainstream, you have to be tuned in to talk radio to get the facts.  Let us not forget that our beloved governor was rated as the WORST senator by Time magazine in 2006.  There was a reason for that.
  • There is evidence coming out that Mark Dayton never intended to pass a budget for this next biennium.  He apparently had several vetoes written up even before the Republicans had put a bill in place for the budget.
  • The Republicans did put a balanced budget bill on the governor's desk.  It was a $32B budget that increased spending by 6% over the last budget.  Governor Dayton wanted a $36B budget that required raising taxes on "the rich."  After weeks of debate the Republicans finally agreed to Dayton's $36B budget.  Note that Dayton has been blaming the Republicans the entire time of being unwilling to compromise and meet him on his budget, and the media eats it up.  However, after the Republican's caved completely on this budget, he pulls the offer and wants a $37.8B budget instead.
  • There is technically no reason why the legislature couldn't pass a 30/60/90 day continuing resolution to keep the government open at the last year's budget levels.  However, since this legislative session is over it would require Governor Dayton call the elected officials back for a special session.  The problem, he refuses to do it.  Making Dayton the first Minnesota governor in over 70 years who has refused to bring the legislature back when a budget was not passed.
So you tell me, in light of of this, is Governor Dayton upholding his fiduciary duty?  Hardly, in fact, the evidence shows that he never wanted a budget in the first place.  He's wanted to shut the government down since the day he walked into office because he knows he can blame it all on the Republicans and the media won't bother to challenge him on it.

Oh, and don't forget his asinine response to the 21st Century voter ID bill, which would require every Minnesotan to have a valid ID in order to vote in the elections.  Dayton's veto of the bill was due to "lack of bipartisan support and overall support from the general public."  Mind you, in a recent poll it was determined that 80% of Minnesotan's support 21st Century ID.

But don't worry, only his "essential" staff is still working.

UPDATE:  Check my previous comments.  The Star Tribune just published this article detailing exactly what Dayton is up to.  There is hope yet if even the Star Tribune is publishing this stuff.

The Bad News Continues

I was out of contact for the past week, so I'm doing my best to catch up on the news:

 ObamaCare strikes again:
As I've said to others before, being a Minnesota resident I'm a little leary of Tim Pawlenty.  He was a big proponent of ethanol and other "green" initiatives while our governor.  He made a hard right turn about 2 years ago when he knew he was going to be running as President, so I was not really buying that he was a true conservative.  But now you've got him going into Iowa and saying its time for ethanol to get phased out.  He's certainly talking the conservative talk.

WH Flounders Yet Again on OBL

More proof that this nation may have already gone off the cliff:
We certainly commend Obama for going in and getting Osama, but it appears he was taking his time in making the decision.  And not just that, this entire situation is turning into a debacle for the administration.  What should have been a shining moment for them is further exemplifying their ineptness and they simply cannot get their story straight.  One person says it was a kill mission.  Another says it was a capture mission.  Biden says it was the SEALs, but everyone else denies it.  At first they said their was a firefight, now Pakistan says there was none.  Leon Panetta says we will see the picture of Osama, but today the President says no.  And these are just a few of the inconsistancies.  And that doesn't even address the irony that our Nobel Peace Prize winning President ordered this assassination.  Or that the intelligence used to find Osama was gathered using techniques the President has vowed to stop using.

Economy, the 2012 Election, and More

The first article is the best article I've seen (with supporting graph) of the difference between the Paul Ryan budget proposal and the 2 proposals from Obama.  The second article is like the first, and shows a great graphic on how the Obama big government approach can't hold water to the Reagan small government approach:
I found a paragraph way down the article to be the most news worthy here.  Only 38% of Americans think that Obama was definitely born in America.  That is amazing to me.  If you did the same survey for any previous President, would you get any less than 80%?  There are always kooks that will say otherwise, but I can't imagine any President has ever been questioned on their nationality to this degree.

Viewing the World Through a Tainted Lens

This article epitomizes to me what is wrong with liberal thinking. Alan Blinder attempts to deconstruct the Paul Ryan budget. Lets take a look at a few things that I believe are severely misguided.

  1. He says the plan will "eviscerate Medicare by privatizing it". That is a lot of demagoguing with no substantive proof. In fact, I'd argue the evidence says just the opposite. Show me one government run business that operates more efficiently (i.e. cheaply) than in the private sector. In the same paragraph he claims the House Republicans will "repeal every cost-containment measure enacted in last year's health reform legislation." That's right, the same bill known as ObamaCare which only appears to save money because they programmed in 10 years of revenues against 6 years of payouts.

  2. He incorrectly asserts that private insurance will continue to rise at a pace faster than the vouchers can cover. Again, this is a philosophical arguement here, but I'd argue that when the government gets out of the way the price of healthcare will stabilize.

  3. His argument against block grants for Medicaid is that it will be left to the individual states. He point is that Paul Ryan's Wisconsin might be able to do it, but it would never work in his home state of New Jersey. That is a serious indictment of the liberals in NJ, not the budget plan.

  4. He claims Obama's budget plan achieves similar deficit reduction. That is laughable on two counts. First, it does not come close to the Ryan plan. And two, Obama came out with a budget back in February. After Paul Ryan released his budget plan making significant budget cuts, Obama was forced to release his second attempt at a budget.

  5. And best of all, the last half of the article he argues that Ryan's plan of shrinking the government is bad at its very core. Federal spending as a percentage of GDP would fall from 23.75% of GDP now to a more reasonable 8.6%... and that's bad why?

Easter Cornucopia

The new civility. Most conservative pundits are claiming this as an outrage, that she deliberately wanted to blow this other politicians brains out. In context that is not the case. She was trying to make a point, I get that. What she should be chastised for is that she used an extremely poor example to make her point:

2012 Budget Plan

A few articles on the economy and specifically the 2012 budget proposed by Representative Paul Ryan.
And an article on how to lower the price of oil. I'm not sure what I think of this article just yet. I've never heard of methane as a fuel source, so I'd have to do some research as to its viability. However, the biggest red flag to me is the need for Congress to mandate it.
And in classic Democrat fashion, they realize their ideas don't work and have to resort to what, gasp, George W Bush did, but refuse to admit it.

Its the Constitution Stupid

Am I the only one to notice that the Obama administration is having one hell of a time understanding what is lawful and what is not? Allow me to provide you several examples.

Exhibit A, the drilling moratorium enacted by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar. As you may recall, that moratorium was not struck down once, but twice. I've blogged about this previously, but there was yet another article in the WSJ today on the matter.

Exhibit B, Obamacare. It too has now been struck down twice as unconstitutional. First U.S. District Court Judge Henry Hudson struck down the "individual mandate" requiring most Americans to purchase health insurance by 2014. Then a month later it was ruled unconstitutional AGAIN in Florida, this time by U.S. District Judge Robert Vinson.

And exhibit C, President Obama told the Justice Department this week to no longer defend the DOMA law. In a Newsmax article today Newt Gingrich explains just how this is in essence a dereliction of duty. Not only that, but Obama is breaking the oath he swore to uphold by unilaterally decided which laws to enforce and which one's to pass on.

Thursday, February 3, 2011

Hello? Anyone Home McFly?

Is it just me, or is it becoming clear that the Obama administration has little to no clue what is entailed in the Constitution or how the legal system works. We have 3 stark examples in just the first two years of this administration:
  1. President Obama directing the Justice Dept to try Khalid Sheik Muhammed in a NYC courtroom. That didn't pan out for obvious reasons, you cannot try a terrorist in a civilian court without having a circus. And when you, do you end up with these results, a terrorist getting acquitted on 224 out of 225 charges.
  2. ObamaCare. In the last 2 months this lynchpin legislation has been struck down as unconstitutional... twice! Once in Virginia, now again this week in Florida.
  3. The drilling moratorium in the Gulf of Mexico. It was ruled again this week that the Obama administration was in contempt of court in imposing these unwarranted restrictions even after the court struck them down.

Newt, Global Warming, and ObamaCare

This my friends, is just one of the reasons why I've lost a lot of respect for Newt:

The Left Has Completely Lost It

Okay, I cannot let this situation with the AZ shooting rest because I just find it so absolutely pathetic how its being handled by the media and Democrats. They are so hypocritical and its so blatantly obvious that its astounding.

Let us do a little exercise. Let us compare the reaction to the recent shooting in AZ with the shooting at Ft. Hood. If you recall we were urged not to jump to any conclusions about the Ft. Hood gunman. He certainly did not represent Islam as a whole and was an extremist. We absolutely must not look at Islam in a bad light because of ONE bad apple.

So is that how the media approached this tragedy? Of course not!!! With the AZ shooter it appears the opposite is true. By all means, jump to any conclusion you want as long as its either: (1) Sarah Palin made him do it; (2) right-wing vitriol is responsible for this attack; or (3) he was possessed by extra-terrestial beings from the planet Alderaan seeking retribution for having their planet blown up by the Death Star.... because any of these are just as likely the truth. The evidence of Democrats politicizing a non-political act continue to mount, even when they admit their is no political connection:

Also, in my last post I linked to article where Eugene Robinson said all of the hate speech is coming solely from the right. Absolutely priceless when considering this:

Despicable Journalism

This entry is going to be my opportunity to vent a little steam over the absolutely shameless journalism that gets released these days. The recent tragedy in Tuscon has sparked an absolute torrent of political vitriol from both sides of the political spectrum, all for something that does NOT appear to be a political act.

Here's a news flash, maybe Jared Loughner was a freaking psychopath!!! But no, we are bombarded with stories about how he is either "a right-wing, anti-gov't, tea partier" or he was sent by Obama because "she didn't vote the party line." Seriously, that constitutes journalism today? It just makes me want to vomit. More Politics as Usual

The blatant disregard for the law of the land by this administration is just absolutely astounding. Not that I'm surprised. That and just the decisions made that are so anti free-market is remarkable. You'd think in the era where unemployment is the highest its been in 30 years we wouldn't continue to put obstacles in the way of working people. You'd think, but here you go:
