I am continually baffled that the American people turn to the government for anything. As I've said a hundred times before, the government is horribly inefficient and wasteful, not to mention corrupt. Take the $700 billion bailout. In the six weeks since the bill has passed no one has been named to fill the independent oversight posts. Nor have any of the required monitoring reports been filled out. That's great, so not only are they blowing taxing payer money, but there is no oversight as to who or what receives it. Its becoming obvious that the Fed and the Treasury are giving money to businesses that were never intended to get a bailout 2 months ago. Atleast the House Minority leader John Boehner is raising a stink about it.
But that's not even the worst of it. Our $700 billion dollar bailout is actually looking more like a $5 TRILLION bailout (another report). I honestly don't know what to say anymore. I'm convinced the American people are stupid, there is no other way to explain why we allow these shenanigans to go on.
James Garfield, 20th U.S. president
Now more than ever the people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless, and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness, and corruption. If it be intelligent, brave, and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities to represent them in the national legislature.

Looks like more incompetence by the Bush Administration. Why haven't they named an inspector general? Why doesn't Paulson have any idea how to run the bailout program? You're baffled people turn to the "government" for anything, how do you feel about Republicans running the government? And, who should people turn to? Lehman Brothers? Goldman, Sachs? General Motors? Private business isn't always any better than the government.
Sorry for the delay in response, its been awhile since I've logged in. Anyway, I'm not ready to put this particular blame at the feet of the Bush administration (not that they are completely innocent though.) I'm putting this squarely on the lap of the Congress. They are the ones that are supposed to be filling these oversight positions and they aren't doing it. I guess I don't know how much authority Bush would have in naming anyone to these oversight committees anyway.
And as for why Paulson doesn't know how to run a bailout, good question. That guy is a weasel through and through in my opinion. But, who in Washington isn't these days.
And my feelings about the Republicans running government. First of all, they only own the White House, the Democrats have everything else. Second, I don't like it, because I'm realizing more and more that I'm a Conservative, not a Republican. I know this because the Republicans in Washington now are idiots and definitely don't represent me!
I would agree in part that private business isn't ALWAYS better than the government. When you get crooks in control, whether it be the government or Lehman Bros, its never a good thing. Assuming however you could have a moral leader at a private institution vs a moral leader in the government, I'll take the private institution anyday. They will absolutely be faster and more efficient. Check out my post from today, the article titled 'Washington is the Problem'. That has a great example of a private business running correctly.
As always, thanks for the comments.
